The Story

Iichiko is the best selling barley shochu in Japan, and this 1.8L paper carton is its most practical format. Made by Sanwa Shurui in Oita Prefecture (one of the heartlands of barley shochu), it's a clean, soft, mellow spirit built for everyday drinking and mixing. The shochu is produced using a blend of two distillation methods: vacuum distillation for lighter, more delicate flavors, and atmospheric distillation for richer, more robust notes. The blend of the two creates a balanced, easy-going spirit. At 20% ABV, this particular version is calibrated for dilution and mixing.

Tasting Profile

Aroma: Subtle and clean, with gentle grain notes and a hint of citrus and peach.

Palate: Light-bodied and soft, with a smooth, mellow character. There's a slight sweetness and a lean, bright quality that makes it easy to drink in various ways.

Finish: Clean and quick, without any harsh follow up.

Serving & Pairing

Serving Temperature: Mizuwari (with cold water), oyuwari (with hot water), on the rocks, or as a base for chu-hai highballs with soda water and citrus. The 20% ABV is specifically designed to be mixed.

Food Pairings: Versatile across cuisines. The clean profile works with everything from salads and sashimi to richer dishes. It's designed to complement food rather than compete with it.

Why We Love It

Sometimes you just need a reliable, well-made spirit in a big format. Iichiko has been the standard for barley shochu in Japan since 1979, when they debuted as one of the first 100% barley, single-distilled honkaku shochus. The paper carton format is how most Japanese households buy their everyday shochu: it's economical, eco-friendly, and practical. If you're getting into shochu or making chu-hai highballs at home, this is the workhorse bottle (well, carton) to start with.
