The Story

Yes, the cup is as cute as it looks, and the sake inside is just as good. Tenmei's Bear Cup is a single serving junmai from Akebono Shuzo in Fukushima, packed into a polar bear glass that doubles as a collectible. But it's not just a novelty: there's serious sake inside. Brewed with a blend of four different rice varieties (Yamada Nishiki, Gohyakumangoku, Kame no O, and Yume no Kaori), it's remarkably balanced and medium-bodied and satisfying for a little cup, with a dry, ricey character and enough depth to keep things interesting.

Tasting Profile

Aroma: Soft and layered, with gentle notes of honeysuckle, melon, and a touch of mint.

Palate: Dry, balanced, and rice-forward, with a solid core of umami and a surprising amount of body. Flavors of sweet rice and banana come through, with a clean, well-structured character throughout.

Finish: Crisp and refreshing, with a quick dry finish.

Serving & Pairing

Serving Temperature: This cup is a true all temperature sake. Enjoy it chilled for the most restraint, at room temperature for a fuller body, or gently warmed for maximum umami and richness.

Food Pairings: The dry, savory profile loves rich and salty food. Think hamburg steak, fish and chips, yakitori, or a sharp cheddar. It's also great alongside fried snacks and comfort food.

Why We Love It

We love this cup because it's the perfect gift, conversation starter, picnic/beach pull, and solo drinking companion all in one. The polar bear glass alone is worth it (we've seen plenty of people come back just for the cup!), but the sake inside is genuinely excellent, medium-bodied, dry, and satisfying. Akebono Shuzo has a beautiful philosophy: their name, Tenmei, means "dawn," and they brew with the sentiment of "the morning sun shining into the darkness." This little bear cup brings a lot of joy to any setting.
